Swine Unit Manager

About this Job:
This position is responsible for managing the swine research facility acting as the Swine Unit Manager for assigned projects, budget, staff, students, animal and facilities care and maintenance, as well as conducting research projects and public relations support for the station.

Primary duties of the Swine Unit Manager include, but are not limited to the following:

  • assessing proposed projects requirements for station and unit resources and evaluate long term effects on both.
  • Assisting with all tasks related to the establishment, maintenance, and disposition of animal specimens, waste management system, and assist in other research units located at Central Crops Research Station on an as needed basis.
  • Applying treatments to research subjects according to specific research protocols including water, feed, research inputs, and medicines, as well as, operate the effluent management system which may include working with various types of irrigation equipment and laying solid set pipe.
  • Assisting research personnel with assigning animals, implementation of treatments, and collection and recording of data.
  • Assisting with maintenance of equipment, grounds, buildings, field plots, and other tasks. The validity of research data requires attention to detail, ability to multitask to successfully complete assigned duties throughout the year.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Knowledge of agricultural practices related to crop and livestock production with research experience.
Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations, on a routine basis and up to 90 pounds on occasion, with or without reasonable accommodations, and perform long periods of repetitive reaching, stooping, standing, bending, and lifting, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to operate machinery associated with livestock and crop production.
Ability to communicate in both oral and written form; ability to read and follow pesticide labels and research protocols.
Ability to collect and record data accurately.
