Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: The Sow Farm Manager is responsible for all aspects of production and maintenance of the herd and facilities.  All farms must adhere to the Hershey Ag Production Manual guidelines with the goal of efficient methods and increasing the quality and volume of wean pigs shipped. The Sow Farm Manager performs all duties in accordance with the mission of Superior Production Systems.
DISEASE PREVENTION:Â This position must adhere to guidelines as outlined in the Biosecurity Policy.
ANIMAL WELFARE:Â This position must adhere to the Animal Handling Policies as outlined in Employee Handbook.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Â
Production Management – Breeding and Gestation
- Ensure all animals have proper feed, water and proper ventilation on a daily basis
- Oversee incoming gilts including tagging and vaccination
- Evaluate sows and oversee culling of sows to be removed from herd
- Manage and oversee heat cycles and breeding of groups on bi-weekly basis
- Oversee herd checks for pregnancy, animals requiring special treatment or rescue
- Oversee and manage proper snake flow of breeding groups through the barn
- Manage feed usage
- Oversee vaccination programs in sows
- Manage medication inventory and usage according to herd health
- Maintain production records (animal breeding, deaths, additions, removals, fallouts)
Production Management – Farrowing
- Oversee farrowing crate set-up and maintenance
- Oversee washing of farrowing rooms
- Ensure proper environment (feed, water and proper temperature and ventilation) is maintained for optimal farrowing
- Oversee vaccination program, Day 1 Care, and processing of litters
- Manage medication inventory and direct medication usage in pigletsÂ
Maintenance
- Identify maintenance needs and prioritize necessary repairs to maintain the equipment, buildings and exterior of the farm
- Manage manure pits and pumps according to manure management program
- Maintain a directory of local maintenance contractors (electrical, etc.)
- Obtain parts as needed to complete repair work
- Coordinate major repair work with OwnerÂ
Administrative
- Schedule team to ensure adequate coverage in the barn and optimal production
- Recruit employees to include advertising for open positions, networking, screening, and interviewing
- Train new team members and develop team members for future growth
- Manage employee performance issues according to company policies for discipline and termination
- Approve payroll on a bi-weekly basis
- Complete new hire paperwork and submit to main office
- Participate in bi-monthly Sow Manager Team meetings
- Promote safe work habits, a safe working environment, and report all work related injuries
- Attend PQA training
- Attend conferences / training sessions
Compliance
- Audit barn safety on an ongoing basis and address any identified safety issues
- Audit alarm systems including temperature, water and electric
- Audit bio-security complianceÂ
Strategy and Planning
- Build, maintain and develop a quality team
- Identify equipment modifications, efficient techniques and other opportunities for improving quality and volume of wean pigs shipped
