Job Description

About the Department
The Department of Animal Science is the largest academic program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and provides academic instruction to over 850 undergraduate students and 70 graduate students. The Department is also a leader in extension and engagement programs to farmers, allied industry and the public, and conducts internationally recognized research into the nutrition, genetic reproductive, health and well-being of domesticated animals.
Essential Job Duties
The position is the primary support for the Swine Educational Unit nursery and grow-finish pigs. Duties will include animal and room checks, feeding, treatment, inventory, sanitation and maintenance. This position will also support other production phases of the farm and the teaching and training programs of the department.
Other Responsibilities

A moderate amount of physical effort is expected. The employee will be required to lift and carry piglets and bags weighing up to 50 lbs for short distances with or without reasonable accommodations.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Three years of swine, poultry, or livestock experience.
  • Basic working knowledge of modern swine production techniques.
  • Observational skills to identify animals in need of assistance due to illness, injury, or normal physiological changes that occur throughout the animal’s life cycle.
  • Organizational skills to manage animals and data collection
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in Livestock Management, Animal Science or related field with experience working with swine, poultry or livestock.
Required License or Certification

North Carolina Drivers License

Upon hiring, will be required to initiate the process of obtaining and maintain certifications for Pork Quality Assurance Plus, Truck Quality Assurance, Class A Animal Waste Operator and Pesticide license.
