Job Description

Suidae Health and Production is currently looking to fill a Farrowing Manager position at their 5,000 head sow farm near Lakota, ND.  Benefits include Health, Vision and Dental, Matching Simple IRA and a Production Bonus.

Objective:

Supervise functions associated with the farrowing performance of farm and collaborate with Farm Manager to meet herd’s productivity and cost of production objectives.

 

Personnel Responsibilities:

  1. Supporting Farm Manager, Farm Owner’s and Management Company decisions, policies and leadership being provided to all farm personnel.
  2. Collaborate with Farm Manager and Breeding Manager concerning scheduling and organization of daily personnel activities.
  3. Supervise and perform production tasks required in farrowing barn.
  4. Assist in evaluating farm personnel.
  5. Training farm personnel how to successfully perform all tasks involved with farrowing barn management.

 

Production Responsibilities:

  1. Daily care of sows and piglets
  2. Optimization of the number of pigs born alive per sow farrowed
  1. Timely checking and assisting of sows farrowing
  2. Ensuring sows are loaded into farrowing far enough in advance of their due date
  1. Maximizing piglet livability
  1. Ensuring adequate clostrom intake before piglets are moved
  2. Timely doing a first sort of new litters to meet sow teat capacity and rearing capabilities
  3. Timely pulling fall behind pigs to nurse litters
  1. Providing proper environment for sows and piglets
  1. Computer controllers set accurately and consistently
  2. Air inlets adjusted accordingly
  3. Heat lamps adjusted according to pig comfort
  4. Pit plugs pulled timely and pit’s recharged to minimize pit gases and odor
  5. Ensures rooms are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between groups
  1. Optimize pig quality at weaning
  1. Maximize wean weight
  2. Maximize wean age
  3. Timely intervene with pigs of substandard quality
  1. Maximize sow feed intake
  1. Ensure fresh feed is available and spoiled feed is dumped out daily
  2. Get sows up at each feeding unless farrowing pigs
  3. Feed sows to intake capacity
  4. Ensure adequate water flow is available to sow
  1. Follow herd health and bio-security protocols
  1. Vaccination protocols timely performed
  2. Sow and piglet treatments done on a timely basis
  1. Piglet processing
  1. Tails are properly docked
  2. Male pigs are timely castrated
  3. Ear tattooing accurately completed
  1. Ensure proper animal husbandry of all animals in farrowing
  1. Timely euthanize suffering animals
  2. Remove dead animals to compost area timely
  3. Ensure that farm personnel move and handle animals properly
  1. Sending a sow to the breeding barn that is in good condition that should re-bred timely

 

Facility Responsibilities:

  1. Timely perform routine building and equipment maintenance
  2. Address issues that may cause an un-safe working environment
  3. Report break downs needing outside contractor assistance to Farm Manager when identified
  4. Ensure that work area is kept picked up, clean, neat and orderly
  5. Assist in keeping office, supply rooms, generator room and storage areas clean and orderly

 

Administrative Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure sow cards are timely and accurately completed
  2. Daily complete production summary reports
  3. Submit production reports to office on expected schedule
  4. Ensure sow tag number and sow card information reconciles
  5. Collaborate with Farm Manager on weaning scheduling and pig flow projections
  6. Managing supply inventory
  1. Ensuring an adequate inventory of products are available on farm
  2. Collaborate with Farm Manager to ensure cost control of supplies being purchased
  3. Collaborate with Farm Manager to order feed

 

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Be willing to respond to and adequately handle emergency alarm calls
  2. Perform miscellaneous tasks as directed by Farm Manager
  3. Be willing to acquire skills as needed to perform technological advancements
