Construction Operations Manager

About this Job:

Christensen Farms is one of the largest, family-owned pork producers in the United States, marketing approximately 3 million hogs per year. Headquartered in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, the company operates throughout the Midwest with facilities in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and South Dakota.  Christensen Farms owns four feed mills, manages 145,000 sows on 44 farms, and oversees more than 350 nurseries and grow-finish sites.  The company employees nearly 1,000 people and maintains 1,500 contract partnerships.

The company is vertically integrated with a strong presence across the pork value chain from farm to fork. Christensen Farms is the largest shareholder of Triumph Foods LLC, a producer-owned primary pork processing plant in St. Joseph, Missouri. In turn, Triumph Foods members own 50 percent of Daily’s Premium Meats, a specialty pork processor of bacon and other premium pork products.  Triumph Foods also holds a 50 percent partnership in Seaboard Triumph Foods, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa, a primary pork processing plant.

Position Overview & Responsibilities: Daily management and coordination of construction site supervisors throughout company trade territory. Direct capital improvement projects in the execution phase. Participate and contribute in the scoping and planning on capital improvement projects. Lead the team of site supervisors in executing projects ensuring the quality and costs standards set by company are met in a timely, efficient and ethical manner. Develop innovating tools to lower costs while increasing quality.

Major Areas of Accountability:

  • Lead the construction team in project development for internal and external customer’s through the planning and execution phases of project management.
  • Maintain and execute all aspects of contractual relationships. Ensures contracts are established according to standard business expectations and controls. Handle contractual disputes in a professional and timely manner.
  • Manage effective relationships with business partners and associated stakeholders. (ex. production operations managers, accounting, supply chain, maintenance and reliability team, business development, and asset administration).
  • Manage effective and mutually beneficial working relationships with vendors and contractors across five states.
  • Manage a professional and effective team and provide resources to help monitor and assess the quality and quantity of work being achieved.
  • Provide high level of customer service and professionalism standards within and outside the construction team.
  • Provide updates to Senior Director of Asset Management on work priorities, schedules, progress, and budgets.
  • Initiate improvements through and with the operational managers and site superintendents.
  • Implement safety programs which comply with federal, state and organizational standards. Participate in the continuous improvement of safety results.
  • Ensure compliance with permitting, testing, inspections and technical requirements

Project Planning and Support

  • Participate with project scope, site assessments, site layout, and project details
  • Participate in pre-construction scoping and planning of capital improvement projects
  • Communicate progress, issues, and solutions to director and coordinator of all construction projects.
  • Monitor the use of and reports from CMMS for all project work

Construction Project Coordination

  • Assign projects to site supervisors, set construction schedules, monitor progress
  • Manage equipment resource planning and utilization for construction services
  • Assess assets and contribute to estimating process with construction operations coordinator
  • Building and maintaining excellent subcontractor and vendor relationships
  • Review and approve contracts with excavators, concrete crews, framers, electricians, and equipment installers
  • Create, review, and teach construction business processes with all construction site supervisors
  • Ensure strict adherence to the SOP’s for site supervisors, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Resolve conflicts with crews, vendors, operations staff, site supervisors, and others related to projects
  • Coordinate schedules and tasks assignments with production managers and farm staff

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Present weekly summary report to Director of Asset Management
  • Review timecards for direct reports
  • Conduct performance reviews with site supervisors
  • Participate in development of department business plan
  • Review and inspect complete projects
  • Contribute to continuous process improvement with the construction services leadership team
  • Constant pursuit of construction project best practices
  • Recruiting and hiring of construction site supervisors
  • Coordinating and leading the initial and ongoing training of construction site supervisor team members
Requirement:

Education, Training, and Experience Requirements:

Minimum formal education required: two year technical college level or above.

Minimum number of years of prior job experience required: Minimal, 5 years. Previous construction related experience and/or education related to the construction field. Work requires extensive knowledge of business operations. Must have knowledge of general construction processes. Understanding of accounting systems, construction phases, materials, and vendors is also required.

Must have high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and important information in a timely manner. Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy. Some analytical ability is required in order to gather and summarize data for reports, find solutions to various administrative problems, and prioritize work. Ensures ethical representation in all facets of Christensen Farms. Ability to apply independent judgment in major areas of accountability. Strict adherence to company confidentiality.

Specialized or Motorized Equipment and/or Tools:

This position will require operating a company vehicle or regular mileage reimbursement. Any employment offer extended for this position will be is contingent upon the review of the candidate’s motor vehicle record (MVR). The MVR will be reviewed to determine insurability based on CFF’s insurance carrier and company policy.
