Animal Husbandry Provides daily animal husbandry to swine located on the property. Requires specific experience with both large, pregnant sows and piglets. GM pigs are maintained behind a barrier which requires adherence to specialized standard operating procedures. Pregnant sows are maintained in an adjacent modular buidling. Care plans must be followed exactly as written to ensure term deliveries of healthy litters. Management of swine at the UAB Farm includes caring for pregnant sows, weaning GM piglets from specialty nursery setting, maintenance of colony during finishing, and establishment of breeding colony.
Other activities include sample collections, animal ID, production records, data recording, etc. Feeds and waters animals according to established SOPs. Ensures appropriate feeding schedule, sterilization of materials and quality assurance of food, water and supplies. Supervises close observation of animals for signs of illness and reports findings to dedicated veterinarian or veterinary technicians. Management of swine at the UAB Farm includes caring for pregnant sows, weaning GM piglets from specialty nursery setting, maintenance of colony during finishing, and establishment of breeding colony. Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies, replenishment system and coordinates major repair with vendor or UAB Maintenance. Maintains detailed Farm records via daily animal and room census records. This activity could include food entry/exit, waste removal, disposition of animal, weaning, breeding, etc. Manages receipt of newly procured animals and Farm records. Also includes the documentation of any sterilization runs conducted and the results of related quality control samples. Will require weekend and/or holiday work in assigned areas.
