Responsible for managing the company’s animal handling practices, identifying ways to reduce the mortality rate and improve pig welfare, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards related to animal handling. Act as the key animal handling resource to employees, producers, and Service Managers in areas of responsibility. Review the animal handling standards and implementation at each assigned farm; review reports related to animal welfare and develop corrective actions as needed. Evaluate animal handling and movement practices as they relate to production and quality movements of animals; advise contract producers, drivers, and production personnel. Diagnose and troubleshoot animal handling processes and outcomes, including review of individual farm layouts. Assist in the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures to achieve animal handling and welfare objectives. Assist with animal handing and safety investigations and follow-up with corrective actions. Assist in development of and maintain training program related to animal care, handling, and movement. Perform classroom and in-field training as defined by established program.
Travel up to 80% of the time to surrounding farms.
Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or related degree. Demonstrated understanding of the environmental and animal health regulations and standards related to pork industry. Demonstrated familiarity with the business of the pork industry. Demonstrated understanding of basic mathematics.
