Swine Finishing Manager

About this Job:


Oversee all daily aspects of swine finishing unit, but not limited to, maintaining targets, daily pig care, facility maintenance, sort/delivery, heard health, vaccination program, nutrition, staff development and record keeping.  Responsibility will encompass up to 26,000 head of wean-to-finishers.

Duties Include:

  1. Administration
    1. Assist Swine Manager with farm budgets and department budgets
    2. Submit weekly sort/sell projection to Swine Manager
    3. Submit weekly accurate farm records to Records department
    4. Manage and maintain farm records
    5. Monitor department environmental controls
    6. Monitor pit status and coordinate timely removal of nutrients
    7. Manage and performs dead pig removal
    8. Manage and maintain whole farm bio-security standards
    9. Manage feed ordering, including budget, delivery, and compliance
    10. Monitor and order medication, and supplies for all departments
    11. Routinely check and repair facilities and equipment
    12. Monitor working condition of back-up generator
    13. Manage and evaluate all farm employees and perform evaluations
    14. Monitor health issues and report to Company Veterinarian
    15. Marketing – setting up loads, selecting pigs, and loading-out
  2. Daily Chores
    1. Oversee all daily feeding of animals and chores, including checking waters, pig condition, building and environment.
    2. Monitor whole herd health
    3. Monitor feed delivery and refill timeliness
    4. Determine cull pigs and transportation
    5. Maintain unit cleanliness
    6. Coordinate power washing and disinfecting between groups including the loading chutes.
  3. Hog Health
    1. Maintain department vaccination schedule
    2. Monitor department health status
    3. Maintain isolation of unhealthy pigs
    4. Organize Vet scheduling for auditing
  4. Employee Administration
    1. Train all staff on Policies & Procedures
    2. Instruct staff on all record keeping
    3. Teach staff to work as a team and lead by example
    4. Assist other team members with time management and production skill development
    5. Meet regularly with employees for production discussion and problem solving
    6. Ensure that each employee understands the expectations and performance requirements for his/her job
  5. Business Management
    1. Monthly analysis and explanation of variance on profit and loss statements
    2. Attend Quarterly Production meetings
  6. Other Duties
    1. Attend other staff meetings and training meetings as scheduled
    2. Follow all safety rules and practice and encourage team to do the same
    3. Follow all applicable bio-security measures per policies
    4. Regular, consistent attendance
    5. Any and all other tasks and responsibilities as may be required

Skills & Abilities
• Prefer an animal science degree (Not Required)
• Minimum 2 or 3 years of experience
• Demonstrated problem solving skills & team building
• Good verbal & written communications skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally high.
