Sow Supervisor

About this Job:

Looking to advance your career in pork production? We are currently expanding our production team with the addition of a Sow Supervisor. In this role, the Sow Supervisor will supervise Sow Farm Managers and their assigned production sites and personnel while providing a conduit for efficient and effective information transfer between field staff and the senior management team.

Preferred candidates will have 3-5 years of proven, successful experience in a related field.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assure farm managers have necessary training, supplies and tools to provide proper swine care
  • Administer protocols for site maintenance and pig management according to the direction of management team
  • Conduct routine site visits to sow farms to assure protocols are followed and objectives are being met
  • Train managers and farm personnel on proper animal welfare and handling techniques
  • Work with farm managers and department managers to manage ventilation controls and troubleshoot ventilation issues
  • Assist with hiring, evaluation, discipline, and termination of employees
  • Identify piglets and sows needing timely euthanasia
  • Train manager and department managers to complete euthanasia process according to company protocols
  • Troubleshoot health challenges of pigs as needed
  • Promote and demonstrate safe animal handling practices
  • Instruct and train managers on proper swine drug administration: mixing directions, quantity for injection and withdrawal times in accordance with company protocols
  • Monitor overall health of pigs and communicate with Senior Sow Supervisor on what is happening in the field
  • Ensure that employees work in a safe manner and use personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
  • Successfully keep employees motivated to perform at a high level to achieve production results and ensure all employees are being trained.
  • Understand daily production numbers and factors that impact goals, as well as the steps the farm is taking to achieve those goals.
  • Possess necessary computer knowledge and skills to successfully run reports, input data, send and receive email, create word and/or excel documents, and navigate company website to find important company documents
  • Serve as a backup on alarm calls
  • Perform snow removal at sites that are company operated or have emergency situations.
  • Adhere to animal well-being and biosecurity policies at all times and partnering with Production Well-being team when incident occurs
  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures and wear appropriate safety equipment (PPE) for appropriate tasks and work in a safe manner
  • The 3 key responsibilities listed above are all tracked via audits, the Sow Supervisor will play a critical role in the success of audits for the entire farm which also impacts incentive payouts
Requirement:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Minimum five years of previous, successful experience in swine production operations and previous leadership and supervision of people is desired

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
A successful Sow Supervisor must be able to multi-task and handle stressful situations in a swine production atmosphere. Thus, they must have initiative, organization, and dependability. This position requires the supervisor to work closely with managers, other supervisors, production staff and other company employees, so teamwork and effective communication skills are very important.
Computer literacy is important with competencies in Excel, Word, Access and Internet Explorer. Direct contact with animals will occur, so excellent stockmanship and bio-security practices must be understood and practiced at all times.
Physical requirements will include the ability to lift 40 pounds and climb over gates up to 4-feet in height. While performing the duties of this job, the sow supervisor will regularly be required to walk and stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, controls, or animals. The sow supervisor will occasionally be required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear. The sow supervisor must be able to, with or without accommodation, work in all facilities within the requirements of this job description
