Research Project Lead

About this Job:

Objective: Develop and direct successful trials from concept, to allocation, to execution/data collection, to analysis within the Pipestone Research Model in order to answer critical questions for Pipestone Leadership.


  1. Responsible for key research projects assigned
    • Attend research planning meetings
    • Lead protocol development
    • Initiate pig sourcing and confirm barn preparedness
    • Lead and direct trial execution utilizing the resources of Pipestone Research
  2. Daily activities will include:
    • Working with wean to finish pigs — 10-320-pound pigs
    • Frequent visits to Pipestone System Managed sow farms
    • Communication to internal and external clients and customers
    • Data collection
      • Weighing
      • Daily record keeping
      • Collection of diagnostics
  1. High degree of accuracy necessary
  2. Ability to manage multiple on-going projects and concepts at the same time
  3. Other duties as assigned

Education: Animal Science degree preferred but not required

Experience: Previous experience with wean to finish farm operations, trial data collection, clear understanding of the scientific process, proficient user of Microsoft Excel, and protocol development preferred.

Work Environment: Agricultural swine environment in rural area

Noise levels that require hearing protection in some areas

Modern wean-to-finish facilities

Physical Requirements: Standing, walking and ability to be on feet 8 to 10 hours per day

Frequent bending, reaching, squatting and kneeling

Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp or pull

Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3-20 pounds

Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or requiring up to 50 pounds of force to move

Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds or requiring up to 100 pounds of force to move with the assistance of another person as needed

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Ability to attend and participate in meetings of various lengths

Additional Requirements: Must be able to work every third weekend

Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to get to work and attend meetings
