Production Well-Being Specialist

We are looking to grow our team in Iowa Falls, Iowa with the addition of a Production Well-Being Specialist (PWB).

The PWB specialist will ensure that all animals in the Iowa Select Farms system are raised and handled following the guidelines set forth in: all Iowa Select Farms Production SOP’s; the Iowa Select Farms Animal Welfare Statement; and the SelectCare program. Additionally, the selected PWB Specialist will coordinate and carry out the ongoing animal handling and welfare training and internal auditing functions of the company. The selected candidate will provide a conduit for information transfer between the farm, the field staff, company veterinarians, senior management and harvest partners.

Key job responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Train, test and empower all staff to be competent in proper care and handling techniques at all levels of production.
  • Conduct animal welfare audits at the farm level during all phases of production.
  • Complete an audit report for each visit and maintain files in the Iowa Falls office.
  • Develop action plans and timelines for continuous improvement.
  • Follow up on any deficient practices noted.
  • Share results with management.
  • Conduct audits of processes that impact animal well-being including handling and transportation of swine into and out of production sites.
  • Report non-compliance issues to farm supervisor and the Director of Production Well-Being.
  • Conduct one-on-one training with farm personnel to develop techniques that will positively impact animal care and overall production.
  • Train and demonstrate proper animal movement using safe handling practices as outlined in the Production SOP Manual.
  • Train farm personnel on proper vaccine and medication injection techniques as outlined in the Production SOP Manual.
  • Train farrowing personnel crews on proper processing techniques, including tail docking and castration as outlined in the Production SOP Manual.
  • Train designated employees on proper euthanasia techniques and methods as outlined in the Production SOP Manual.
  • Assure proper observation and euthanasia records are available, understood and completed accurately.
  • Routinely monitor overall medication and vaccination treatments to assure challenged pigs are being identified, assessed and treated as outlined in the Production SOP Manual.
  • Evaluate overall feed and water system management in relationship to animal well-being.
  • Assure site personnel have necessary supplies and tools to maintain compliance with animal care and handling policies.
  • Lead group meetings/trainings using effective presentation techniques including handouts and PowerPoint Presentations.
  • Observe overall herd health and site management and communicate information pertinent to animal well-being to the Director of Production Well-Being.
  • Complete a weekly summary of objectives and accomplishments and electronically submit it to Director of Production Well-Being-Be able to understand and demonstrate approved animal welfare procedures and bio-security at all times.
  • Have a thorough understanding of current and emerging issues in swine as well as other food animal production.
  • Demeanor should be positive and professional at all times.
  • Daily focus should be on welfare of animals, not personal issues.
  • Attendance is critical. Be at work on scheduled days and be ready to work by start time given.
  • Be friendly, positive, helpful, team-oriented and respectful to co-workers and management team.
  • Flexibility in hours during health and staffing challenges is required.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the company.

  • Responsible for development and training of employees by utilizing your resources and supervisors, asking for help where needed.

Additionally, all Iowa Select Farms employees must:

  • Adhere to animal well-being policies at all times and partner with the Production Well-being team in a timely manner if/when incident occurs.
  • Adhere to bio-security policies at all times and fixing any violation(s) if an issue is brought to light.
  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures and wear appropriate safety equipment (PPE) for appropriate tasks and work in a safe manner at all times
Requirement:

Education, experience and additional qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in animal agriculture or a related field.
At least 3-5 years of hands-on work experience in pork production, training or auditing fields is preferred.
Bilingual, Spanish speakers preferred, but not required.
Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to production sites, meetings and appointments
Ability to occasionally travel for weekend and evening work when necessary.
This position requires the specialist to work closely with staff veterinarians, managers, supervisors, production staff and other company employees, so teamwork and effective communication skills are very important.
Ability to articulate well and communicate issues to a variety of audiences, from on-farm personnel to customers and consumers.
Computer literacy is important with competencies in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Access and Internet Explorer.
This person must be a self-starter, be detail oriented, and be able to schedule tasks and meet timelines and deadlines. Thus, they must have strong personal initiative, organization, and dependability.
This person must also possess problem solving skills, creativity and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Physical Requirements:

The ability to lift up to 40 pounds and to climb over gates up to 48 inches in height.
Pushing, pulling, bending and kneeling.
While performing the duties of this job, the PWB Specialist is regularly required to walk and stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, controls, or animals.
The PWB Specialist is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear.
