HR Manager – Employee Relations

Christensen Farms is one of the largest, family-owned pork producers in the United States, marketing approximately 3 million hogs per year. Headquartered in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, the company operates throughout the Midwest with facilities in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and South Dakota.  Christensen Farms owns four feed mills, manages 145,000 sows on 44 farms, and oversees more than 350 nurseries and grow-finish sites.  The company employees nearly 1,000 people and maintains 1,500 contract partnerships.

The company is vertically integrated with a strong presence across the pork value chain from farm to fork. Christensen Farms is the largest shareholder of Triumph Foods LLC, a producer-owned primary pork processing plant in St. Joseph, Missouri. In turn, Triumph Foods members own 50 percent of Daily’s Premium Meats, a specialty pork processor of bacon and other premium pork products.  Triumph Foods also holds a 50 percent partnership in Seaboard Triumph Foods, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa, a primary pork processing plant.

Position Overview & Responsibilities: The Employee Relations Manager will perform tasks associated with employee relations matters such as investigations, coaching, counseling and terminations. Responsible to provide guidance in employee relations maters, employment law, and conflict mediation for employees and managers. The role will be responsible to provide great internal customer support and ensuring best HR practice to meet business goals and objectives. This position will be located in the Sleepy Eye office with some travel requirements to other company locations. Must be willing to work in the evening and on weekends as required.

Major Areas of Accountability:

Employee Relations

  • Respond to employee relation issues such as employee complaints or conduct employee work place investigations and provide recommendations on appropriate resolutions to Sr. HR Manager.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of employee relation issues and incidents.
  • Provide guidance to managers pertaining to the disciplinary process or termination events, handling routine and moderate situations independently. Ensure appropriate documentation is obtained and processes are followed to minimize risk.
  • Provide interpretation to employees and managers regarding questions or concerns related to company policies and procedures.

Workers’ Compensation/FMLA/Leave of Absence

  • Train in the work comp and injury reporting process to serve as a backup for the work comp administrator.
  • Assist with ensuring appropriate administration of all leave of absence policies. Consults with legal counsel as appropriate.
  • Assist with the review and coordination of the job accommodation process and ensure alignment with ADA, state and local compliance.

Other Functions

  • Initiates updates to HR policies and procedures to reflect changes in relevant laws.
  • Oversee office orientation program and provide topic specific Participate in initiatives related to retention and onboarding work.
  • Coordinate and conduct HR process training with managers.
  • Provide guidance to managers and ensure that all company job descriptions are up to date and accurate.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations concerning employment.
  • Respond to unemployment claims and participate in unemployment hearings when needed.

The ideal candidate with have a 4 year degree in Human Resources Management or related field or equivalent experience; minimum of 1-3 years Human Resource Generalist experience or experience in a related Human Resources role. HR Certification (PHR or SHRM-CP) preferred.
