Gilt Developer Unit Lead

About this Job:

Objective: The “GDU Lead” owns every detail that affects the gilt from the day she walks off the trailer into quarantine until the day a catheter is inserted.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. 1. Overall management of GDU including but not limited to:
    1. Maximize Feed Intake

i. Feeder management — daily adjustments

ii. Feed ration management

iii. Water — flow and availability

iv. Minimize stress events

  1. Ventilation Management

i. Controller knowledge

ii. Air — flow, speed, and exchange

iii. Set temp vs. actual

iv. Environment assessment – laying patterns, humidity, cleanliness

  1. Health Management

i. Medication/vaccination schedule

ii. Treatment identification

iii. Threshold communication

  1. Overall Flow Management

i. Nursery management

  1. Incoming preparation
  2. Intensive monitoring

ii. Stocking density/square footage

iii. Replacement rate, selection rate and timing

iv. Weekly targets — mortality, removals, HNS

  1. Inventory and Record Keeping

i. Gilt Entry Protocol — ear tagging and recording within 7 days of arrival

ii. Daily movements into gestation barn, HNS events, mortality and culls

iii. Weekly inventory tracking

  1. GDU Snapshot

i. Boar exposure management

ii. Heat detection

  1. HNS row management.
  2. Understanding breed eligible targets.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

1. Depending on layout/size of farm — may cross over time/labor in gestation barn or other areas of the farm.

Requirement:

Education: Agriculture Degree or equivalent experience

Experience: 2 years

Training: Safety Orientation Video

Work Environment: Agricultural swine environment in rural area

Noise levels that require hearing protection in some areas

Gestation, farrowing, and small swine care processes

Physical Requirements: Standing, walking and ability to be on feet 8 to 10 hours per day

Frequent bending, reaching, squatting and kneeling

Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp or pull

Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3-20 pounds

Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or requiring up to 50 pounds of force to move

Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds or requiring up to 100 pounds of force to move with the assistance of another person as needed

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Ability to attend and participate in meetings of various lengths

Additional Requirements: Must live no farther than 30 minutes driving distance from farm being managed

Must be able to work every third weekend

Must have valid drivers license and reliable transportation to get to work and attend meetings
