Environmental Service Manager

About this Job:

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Coordination in the Nutrient Management Department to ensure that records are accurately kept, management plans are filed accordingly, custom applicators are supplied with the necessary information needed to apply the nutrient.  Ultimately, the Environmental Services Manager must ensure that Iowa Select Farms is in compliance with all regulations regarding use, storage, and application of manure.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to ISF animal wellbeing policy at all times and partnering with Animal Well-being team when incident occurs.
  • Adhere to ISF bio-security policy at all times and fixing violation if issue is brought to light.
  • Adhere to ISF safety policies and procedures and wear appropriate safety equipment (PPE) for appropriate tasks and work in a safe manner.
  • Coordinate the sampling and delivery of soils, manure or any resource requiring analysis.
  • Professionally represent ISF as liaison with landowner, tenant, custom applicators, and laboratory in regards to crop and nutrient management.
  • Review all application events from the site specific application handbook, enter application data into database, and generate reports for tenants/landowners, applicators, and ISF records.
  • Maintain central and field copies of MMP’s in an up-to-date status at all times.
  • Develop rate and application information and guidelines for field staff, custom applicators, landowner and/or tenant.
  • Become familiar and then proficient with the P-index and RUSLE2
  • Develop imagery with acreage, buffer strips, risk areas, field borders, etc. as part of the application binder.
  • Maintain the DNR and field application files according to regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Iowa State Extension, crop science and nutrient uptake recommendations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of EPA and DNR imposed CAFO rules that can impact ISF practices.
  • Utilize GIS program to digitize field boundaries by site and maintain accurate soil information in GIS program.
  • Act as a liaison with field personnel on pivot management and application events to ensure the landowner or tenant receive maximum benefit from nutrients and lagoons are lowered to assure maximum capacity during the dormant months.
  • Become familiar and then proficient with the Nutrient Management database.
  • Participate in supporting the functions of the Environmental Services Group, LLC as needed.
  • Demeanor should be positive and professional at all times.
  • Daily focus should be on welfare of animals, not personal issues.
  • Attendance is critical. Be at work on scheduled days and be ready to manage ones assigned field areas.
  • Be friendly, positive, helpful, team-oriented and respectful to co-workers and management team.
  • Flexibility in hours during health and staffing challenges and application season is required.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the company.
Requirement:

Bilingual: Not required

Education/ Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture related field or significant experience and understanding of manure application and overall management practices.

Qualifications: Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

This person must be a self-starter and be able to schedule tasks; thus, they must have initiative, organization, and dependability. This position requires the manager to work closely with suppliers, independent contractors, production staff and other employees, so teamwork and effective communication skills are also very important. Direct contact with animals may occur, so good stockmanship and bio-security practices must be understood and practiced at all times. Computer literacy is important with competencies in Excel, Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 40 pounds and to climb over gates up to 48 inches in height as well as pushing, pulling, bending and kneeling. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, controls, or animals. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to, with or without accommodation, work in all facilities within the scope of the employee’s responsibility.
