Employee Relations Specialist

The Employee Relations Specialist will perform tasks associated with employee relations matters such as investigations, coaching, counseling and terminations. Responsible to provide guidance in employee relations matters, employment law, and conflict mediation for employees and managers. The role will be responsible to provide great internal customer support and ensuring best HR practice to meet business goals and objectives. This position will be located in the Sleepy Eye office with some travel requirements to other company locations. Must be willing to work in the evening and on weekends as required.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

Employee Relations

  • Respond to employee relation issues such as employee complaints or conduct employee work place investigations and provide recommendations on appropriate resolutions to Sr. HR Business Partner.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of employee relation issues and incidents.
  • Provide guidance to managers pertaining to the disciplinary process or termination events, handling routine and moderate situations independently. Ensure appropriate documentation is obtained and processes are followed to minimize risk.
  • Provide interpretation to employees and managers regarding questions or concerns related to company policies and procedures.

Secondary Responsibilities:

Worker’ Compensation/FMLA/Leave of Absence

  • Train in the work comp and injury reporting process to serve as a backup for the work comp administrator.
  • Assist with ensuring appropriate administration of all leave of absence policies. Consults with legal counsel as appropriate.
  • Assist with the review and coordination of the job accommodation process and ensure alignment with ADA, state and local compliance.

Other Functions

  • Initiates updates to HR policies and procedures to reflect changes in relevant laws.
  • Participate in initiatives related to retention and onboarding work.
  • Provide guidance to managers and ensure that all company job descriptions are up to date and accurate.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations concerning employment.
  • Assist with providing information relevant to unemployment claims and participating in unemployment hearings when needed.
Requirement:

The ideal candidate will have a 4 year degree in Human Resources Management or related field or equivalent experience; minimum of 1-3 years Human Resource Generalist experience or experience in a related Human Resources role. HR Certification (PHR or SHRM-CP) preferred.

This candidate will have knowledge of state and employment regulations, employment law, EEO, FMLA and ADA guidelines and requirement. Must possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel overnight. Ability to utilize independent judgement to effectively manage time-sensitive situations with the ability to escalate high pressure/risk situations. Must possess effective interpersonal communications skills to counsel managers and staff. Must have the appropriate level of assertiveness in order to have influence on the various parties to reach the best outcome as it pertains to organizational risk. Must possess exceptional organizational skills to ensure appropriate and timely follow up throughout all situations.

This position reports to the Senior HR Business Partner.
