Breeding Lead Animal Care Worker

Christensen Farms is one of the largest, family-owned pork producers in the United States, marketing approximately 3 million hogs per year. The company is vertically integrated with a strong presence across the pork value chain from farm to fork. Christensen Farms is the largest shareholder of Triumph Foods LLC, a producer-owned primary pork processing plant in St. Joseph, Missouri. In turn, Triumph Foods members own 50 percent of Daily’s Premium Meats, a specialty pork processor of bacon and other premium pork products.  Triumph Foods also holds a 50 percent partnership in Seaboard Triumph Foods, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa, a primary pork processing plant.

Primary Job Function:

Has immediate responsibility for identification of onset of estrus (heat checking) of the sow and gilt herd on a sow farm insuring proper insemination timing resulting in achievement of targeted farrow rate objectives. In addition, the breeding lead will have the responsibility of scheduling departmental tasks, verifying completion and reporting to the farm manager on a daily basis activities completed and recommendations for future scheduling of tasks.

Major Areas of Accountability

General Production

The Breeding Lead must have proven his/her ability to perform all competencies at a high level identified in the Herdsperson Job Title. In addition, accountability of the following areas –

  1. Heat detection of open animal population verifying the correct timing of the onset of estrus in preparation for breeding.
  2. Heat detection of the gestating sow population specific to heat checking guidelines lay out in the SOP manual.
  3. Adherence of SOP processes setting the example for all other staff members including but not limited to;
    1. Quality Mates
    2. Barn Flow
    3. Gilt Management practices
    4. Barn organization and sanitation
    5. Sow Conditioning
    6. Pregnancy detection
  4. Scheduling of daily tasks in the breeding and gestation areas of the sow farm.
  5. Communication with the farm manager on task completion and future tasks needing scheduling in the future.
  6. Weekend accountability of task completion in the absence of the farm manager. Report concerns or problems to the farm manager for resolution.
