Assistant Feed Mill Manager

About this Job:


Position Overview and Responsibilities:

This position will provide general support to the Feed Mill Plant Manager. This position will also be the contact person in the absence of the Feed Mill Plant Manager as needed.

Key area of responsibility:

Assist Plant Manager with the following:

  1. Be cross trained in the following areas as a backup and a trainer for new staff:
    • Grinding
    • Batching
    • Pelleting
    • Receiving
    • Bin Management
    • Load out
  2. Ensure consistency and quality standards are met in the following areas:
    • Grinding
    • Batching
    • Pelleting
    • Receiving
    • Bin Management
    • Load out
  3. Perform and document product quality control processes as specified.
  4. Assist in scheduling preventative maintenance on milling equipment.
  5. Diagnose feed processing problems and make any necessary equipment adjustments.
  6. Perform daily inventory reconciliation.
  7. Manage daily ingredient inventories/submit ingredient orders.
  8. Ensure inventory management SOP is met.
  9. Responsible for the entering and printing of feed ingredient purchase orders and receipt of goods.
  10. Maintain formula files and reconcile drug usage on a daily basis.
  11. Submit ingredient and feed samples to lab and record results.
  12. Adhere to all safety protocols and advocate for a safe work environment.
  13. Participate in Safety Committee and conduct monthly department safety meetings
  14. Assist mill operations in diagnosing feed processing problems and make any necessary equipment adjustments.
  15. Responsible for all record keeping and ingredient audits required for HACCP Certification.
  16. Perform additional duties as assigned by Feed Plant Manager
  17. Support Plant Manager to improve processes and support company initiatives.

Driver Management/Employee Development:

  • Assist in training new drivers/haulers as directed by Plant Manager

Feed Delivery:

  • Responsible for scheduling daily feed delivery runs to reflect an organized and efficient delivery scheduling according to feed orders and plant requirements
  • Work with Feed Ordering Department on changes, retrievals and overruns

Staff/Employee Development:

  1. Provide input and direction in the recruitment process
  2. Assist in development and supervision of mill employees
  3. Participate in development and execution of a strategic staffing plan for the Feed Mill.
  4. Assist in employee development training programs and monitor the use and effectiveness of the same.
  5. Utilize individual employee development planning processes to build and maximize human capital through use of the management development courses and regular performance feedback.

Job Requirements:

Ability to read and write in English in order to process paperwork and infer any follow-up action necessary.
Lifting ability of 50 lbs on a regular basis.
Mechanical ability to perform maintenance and repairs on equipment.
Manual dexterity needed for keyboarding and other repetitive tasks.

Personal Requirements:

Must have ability to work independently and function with little to no direction. Must be self directed and motivated. Must have strong mechanical ability. Display a high level of professionalism. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Must have ability to adapt time and efforts in priority areas. Strong problem solving and decision making ability required. Complete manager training as directed by Plant Manager.
